President’s letter: December

Hi everyone,

So is anyone else totally obsessed with the goings on of Julian Assange and his anarchistic adventures with Wikileaks? Nothing like diplomatic gossip ala web2.0 to get those in formal power all hot and bothered.  Of course the mantra “dont’ write / say  anything you wouldn’t want to see on the front page of the Herald Sun” has long been repeated by communications professionals. It appears our diplomats could do with a special envoy from IABC. Or not? Is it unreasonable to expect diplomacy to operate within the scrutiny of transparency?

It’s a provocative topic at the moment. For those wanting more to think about here is Deloitte Digital CEO Peter Williams piece on on the implications for Government and Business of Wikileaks and Geek War 1. SR Link - the Social Responsibility blog of IABC also suggests two must reads on the topic. I am hoping Santa leaves me  some time to do some reading !

And while I am on the topic of transparent diplomats, I am delighted to announce that we have a new President Elect. Former Brand & PR VP Kate O Donnell was successful in her application after Julia Stokes stepped down from the role and off the board.  A big congratulations to Kate on her appointment and congratulations to Julia for some fabulous career opportunities that will be keeping her very very busy! We can also welcome Kelly Vandrine as our incoming Communications VP when Stacey Buchanan rolls off the board for maternity leave, and Mike Lagastes into the role of new Brand & PR VP.

We are still looking to fill a very important role on the board, that of Membership VP. There are two main components of the role. One is more administrative / process in nature - welcoming members, following up lapsed members, ensuring that the Head Office member promotions are actioned locally. The other component is more strategic and suit some-one with a marketing / sales background. It involves looking at the member demographics and conducting appropriate engagement activities, as well as member recruitment.

Who would this suit? Typically volunteer board roles suit people who:

  •   are passionate about the industry,
  •  want to make a difference,
  •  have between 1 – 5  hours a week available,
  •  can put together teams of volunteers
  •   want to increase their professional network
  • want to improve their career opportunities.

We are more than happy share the IABC Vic Strategy document or Induction Pack on request.  All of us on the board are happy to chat with you about the roles. It maybe that Membership can be ‘job-shared’ — let us know if you have an interest.

Also if you have the time check out our:

So with that excitement out of the way – let me finish by wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas, a most  festive season,  and safe and happy holidays.

Be heard,

 Jennifer
